Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Sunday 28 July

We will be looking at three techniques to explore the behaviour of light during the golden hour. Backlighting is great for nature shots when the sun is low in the sky. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

Taken at Derby Station, when taking the shot my original thoughts were B&W because of chrome/steel combination, but the yellow input made me reconsider. Taken on iPhone edited in Camera Raw/Photoshop to reduce all the colour apart from orange/yellow. Pleased with the fact it gave the steel a warmer and more interesting feel.

Bucket List - Check!!!I finally made it to the Big Bend area. Here's a shot I got at the Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery, just before sunrise. Canon EOS R, EF 16-35L F2.8, 30 Sec, f2.8, ISO 3200. Used x2 small video lights on lowest power, to light up the foreground. Taken 3/13/2024. Terlingua, Texas.

I took this photograph just after the sun had set.I used the long exposure setting on my phone to create the wispy water affect. Then I made basic slight adjustments/edits using the lightroom app.
